Under Water

A digital oil painting made in the Vermillion VR oil painting simulation. This painting depicts what could be an underwater scene.

This painting again comes from my fascination with reverse painting, that is, starting with a black canvas. I first saw the reverse technique from a chalk pencil artist. I think that some of these comes from a black-on-white rebellion since white tends to hurt my brain and makes my vision more unstable. White paper really does increase eye strain yet people stick to it because well, people stick to it.

Anyway, over the years I have done a few different water scenes but this is the first time I have attempted to paint it. It may not really scram water to some people but a few people have said that it fits so I’m happy.

I was thinking about the video game Subnautica at the time I was painting this. This game is one of the few that I have finished more than once., which is exceptionally unusual for me. Games that have a definite ending are often one-offs for me. I finish them and move on. However, the visuals in Subnautica were so different that I just had to see as much of it as I could. Same with the sequel, Below Zero.

If you have ever played the original game, you’ll probably recognize some of the patterns here, at least vaguely and that’s good. If not, well, I hope that you still find the painting interesting.
